Aphorisms of E.H. Looney, Part Six

A little preface: E.H. Looney was one of the foremost traditionalist reactionaries on Twitter back in the good ol’ days (@Gaelic_Norseman). His aphoristic tweets on Christianity, democracy, history, and culture were among the very best in terms of substance and wit. Although a majority of them are lost, there are still a small handful that I’ve preserved in an Evernote notebook, and I simply find them worthy of sharing. Credit to Wrath of Gnon for also preserving and sharing some of them over the years, too. This is part six; here’s part onepart twopart threepart four, and part five. — E

“Traditional iconography saves the Church from bad art, if nothing else.”

“Every good father will tell you that his entire life is a cross, even exercising his own legitimate authority is a sacrifice.”

“If we are all equal, then no one needs anything else. We are all alone; life is meaningless, and love dies of asphyxiation.”

“No religion, no countries, no property, no heaven, no hell, no fun.”

“The provincial mentality is the most universal; the ‘universal’ mentality the most provincial.”

“A good father, like a good icon, is a window to the divine. Nothing can replace him in the social order.”

“The 1st century was expecting a lion, but got a lamb. The 21st century is expecting a lamb, when a lion is on his way.”

“If you don’t have a right to the land your forefathers bled and died for, then you don’t have any rights at all.”

“Multiculturalism: creating hate where there was none before.”

“Always err on the side of obedience. Always err on the side of tradition. Always err on the side of beauty. Then you won’t err at all.”

“Even the tiny leftovers of medieval Germany are infinitely more charming than the very best of the Borg society that usurped it.”

“Traditionalist reactionaries agree that economics are just one part of life, like the entrails are just one part of the body. Vitally necessary, but not for polite conversation.”

“How many white ‘Christians’ would choose martyrdom for Christ above their own skins nowadays? There is a reason martyrdom is the gold standard of devotion. There are, statistically speaking, no Christians left in the West.”

“Being meek before God is pretty much a superhuman achievement for almost anyone besides a warrior or a serious priest.”

“Weightlifting + Baroque music. Best meditation around.”
